A sky full of stars
Not a Space’s winter pop-up in Al Faya is inspired by the winter rituals and stories of the UAE.

In the mountains of the Al Faya desert, 30 minutes from downtown Sharjah, the sound of conversation is carried on the cool evening air. Residents and tourists have gathered in an open-air space, settled on beanbags, illuminated by the glow of full-moon lamps. A bonfire completes the picture: a cozy night under the stars.
Not a Space’s winter pop-up was designed with community in mind.
“We wanted to create a relaxed, open space that reminds people of the simple things in life: coffee, stories, and good company,” says Not a Space co-founder Najla Al Ansari. “It’s an experience, a story, a journey and a destination all at once.”
The space is indeed simple. A circular stage in the centre hosts live entertainment, such as nightly fire shows from 9:30pm. Not a Space is dedicated to highlighting local talent, including musicians and dancers. A repurposed shipping container serves hotdogs, burgers, coolers, and specialty coffee.
“We are inspired by the winter rituals and stories of the UAE,” Al Ansari says. “For generations, nights in the desert have been a way for us to bond. It’s never about the space itself, but rather about the friendships that form and the stories that are created by the people in it.
“That’s why we’re called ‘Not a Space’. We see ourselves as a venture with a heart, rather than just a franchise, one that brings wild souls together.” It’s a philosophy that guides its year-round location in Muwaileh too, home to the brand’s cafe, parlour, barbershop, and pet-grooming service.
The Al Faya pop-up is not only about food and entertainment, guests can choose from experiences too, including paragliding, padel, bike rides and mountain hikes. Open daily from 6am to 1am, it attracts a diverse community, from the sunrise crowd to night owls and explorers. Sunset is usually busiest, but Al Ansari says she has been surprised by how many people come late at night, opting for the calm of the desert.
“Then again,” she says, “with the mountain views, a full moon, and a sky full of stars, it really is a magical experience.”
The pop-up will run until April 1st.
